Hi, I’m Gene. I’m the marketing assistant for Boost Reality, an Australian startup in the augmented reality space. This blog post aims to give other beginners some insights into how we are bringing a new app to market without spending thousands of dollars on advertising. Augmented reality is a largely unheard-of technology for the average consumer. As such, conversion campaigns have been challenging, since the usual response to the phrase augmented reality is: ‘what’s that?’. New offerings to the market require much more time spent on crafting an explanation of the product/service and how they service the target market’s needs.
In the span of three months, we have grown the number of consistent users by 450 percent. We achieved this by using underutilised marketing channels such as public speaking events, word of mouth, online enthusiast forums, and old-fashioned networking. Cost-effectiveness and channels with less competition were the main selection criteria.
The channels we found to be most effective are ones that made the target audience feel like they were not being advertised to. This is unsurprising, considering the inordinate amount of advertisements we are bombarded with each day. Startups cannot compete with the enormous marketing budgets of multinational corporations, therefore more intimate and genuine messaging needs to be used to communicate with target audiences.
Rather than using exponential amounts of money for our marketing campaign, we will continue to write about creative ways to solve the problem.
